This year at Lindale on the Kapiti Coast a unique Butterfly Farm will be established. The Farm is known as 'Butterfly World'.

It is run as a Trust and Ms Jenny Rowan, QSO, JP, Mayor of the Kapiti Coast District Council is its first Patron.

Earlier in the year Ms Rowan officially announced the formation of the Trust with a declaration to develop 'Butterfly World'.

Also present was Jacqui Knight from the Monarch Butterfly NZ Trust. Her knowledge about Monarch Butterflies will be of enormous help to the Trust.

Over 50 pupils from schools in the Kapiti area attended and under the guidance of local nursery owners, Glen’s & Gus Evans, helped to seed 100 pots. When propagated they will be planted around the Farm in mid November.

A total of 500 Giant Swan plants (Gomphocarpus physocarpus) along with over 1000 border and nectar varieties will be planted. The Trust plans to have a population of 20,000 Monarchs and other New Zealand and local species raised each year.

Here are some photos of the Giant Swan Plant (main host plant), the 'TUI' vine (exterior border and nectar) and Egyptian Starcluste (nectar plant)

Here are some photos of the 3 main species we are intending to breed

A special area has also been set aside to provide a breeding habitat for other species of butterflies including the Red & Yellow Admirals.

Many of the border and nectar plants will attract a range of beautiful NZ Native birds such as the Tui, Fantail & Bellbird (pictured above), that will add interest to this development.

'Butterfly World' will be set amongst beautiful gardens and over the next few years it will be developed to become a significant tourist attraction in the Kapiti region.

The Butterfly

A Symbol of Hope

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.
